Optical and radio astronomers are trying to build big telescopes, but for different reasons?
How these goals differ?
Greater openness has the same benefits, regardless of the wavelength: a higher resolution and higher sensitivity to faint objects. In optical telescopes, however, the resolution has been limited by the atmosphere, where the principal purpose of the opening increased sensitivity was simply better. radio telescopes, including the longer wavelengths, need a lot of opening for a decent resolution. Rather than trying incredibly large dishes, radio observatories using synthetic aperture techniques, combination of inputs from an array of small dishes distributed over a large area. The sensitivity is still as large as the combined land area, but the resolution is determined by the diameter of the entire network. As adaptive optical techniques best optical telescopes are beginning to use these techniques, too.
