What is the difference between a “prolonged release” drug and a “sustained release” drug?
Can someone please explain in layman’s terms? (I haven’t learned that much about pharmaceutics yet).
prolonged release— a term applied to a drug that is designed to deliver a dose of a medication over an extended period.
sustained release— an oral dosage form designed to be absorbed at various levels in the gastrointestinal tract, thus prolonging action. Also,designed to slowly release a drug in the body over an extended period of time
So they are almost the same, but sustained release is more similar to a controlled release, where the mediciation is delivered in spurts at various times thru the day until it is absorbed
