If an intruder enters a private home illegally, can the resident kill the intruder?

If the intruder poses a threat, can the resident kill the intruder without getting into trouble with the law?

In most jurisdiction you have the right to defend yourself(some allow for defense of property) when necessary. However there is considerable differences of opinion in this matter and there are judgements against some who the courts felt were not in that much danger. The sound judgement is to only use deadly force when you feed you life or the life of another is in danger. That way if the courts do not agree, at least you saved your life.
