All About Emts

Have you ever noticed that law enforcement and emergency medical services run in families? For example, many people find their children or grandchildren choosing the same profession as they do. My dad was a paramedic for over ten years and now my brother is in training to become an EMT. Both paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are vitally important to our society. Here are some of the facts and fictions about emergency medicine.

Did you know there are different levels of EMTs and paramedics? According to the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) there are five levels of emergency personnel: First Responder, EMT Basic, EMT Intermediate 1985, EMT Intermediate 1999, and Paramedic. Just to confuse things, some states have their own level distinctions and names. Paramedic is the highest national level you can achieve for emergency service after you have reached each other level. The duties you are allowed to perform vary greatly, but generally the EMT Basic “has the emergency skills to assess a patient’s condition and manage respiratory, cardiac, and trauma emergencies.” In our state, the difference between a Basic and Intermediate is the ability to perform IVs and give a patient shots. The NREMT defines a paramedic’s duty, “In addition to carrying out the procedures of the other levels, paramedics administer medications orally and intravenously, interpret electrocardiograms (EKGs), perform endotracheal intubations, and use monitors and other complex equipment.”

Many times, people who are interested in emergency medical work choose to pursue some other interest because they are afraid of some of the myths they have heard about EMTs. For example, “most of the runs are bloody and grotesque” or “you must know all kinds of medical terminology”. The truth is though that many runs are people who are sick, got a concussion, broke a leg, or had a heart attack. EMTs do not generally get bloody calls. While it is great if you want to learn the medical terminology used for emergency medicine, your local station will train you beginning at the first level of EMT service, which does not require much medical terminology. Although, my brother discovered that the more he understood about medicine, the more fascinated he was and the more he wanted to know, so you might enjoy the “medical terminology” more than you think. If you see emergency vehicles frequently in your area you might think your local station has more than enough help, but usually the opposite is the case. Even if your district works under a volunteer basis like mine, there are never enough personnel. Volunteering or applying for an EMT position is a great thing to do even if you don’t plan on going into emergency medicine as a career, because it is a positive characteristic for your resume and it is a great way to be of service to your community.
