A Look at the Role Played by Bacteria and Viruses

Bacteria are those organisms that are made of only one cell, that is they are unicellular in nature. They can multiply by themselves as they have the capacity to divide. Bacteria are those organisms that are found everywhere- inside as well as outside our body. They can be classified as useful bacteria and harmful bacteria.

Viruses are very minute organisms that we cannot see them with our naked eyes. They cannot multiply themselves and so they need to inhabit a host cell and take over its mechanisms for making more virus particles. Viruses comprise of the genetic materials that is the DNA or RNA that is adhered by a protective layer of proteins. They have the capacity of fastening on the cells and getting into them.

Infections caused due to the bacteria or viruses basically spread in the same way:

* Bacteria or virus can be transferred to another person by shaking or touching hands with the infected person.

* Bacterial and viral infections can be spread by sneezing or coughing of the person having common cold.

* The different body fluids like saliva, blood, semen may have the infected organisms and transfer of such fluids to the other person by injection or sexual contacts may lead to different viral and bacterial infections.

Viruses and bacteria that can cause diseases in a human being are referred to as pathogens. Pathogens can enter your body by means of water, air, or having contact with an infected person. Diseases that are caused as a result of bacteria can be cured by medicines. But, diseases caused due to the viruses have no cure as there are no such medicines invented till now that can cease the growth of the viruses. However, there are vaccines available for the prevention of the virus. The immune system of your body has to do this job of fighting against the viruses. Sometimes the body wins while sometimes it loses.

Bacteria are mostly harmless. Only 1 percent of them are found to be causing diseases in living beings, whereas others are very essential for the existence of life on the Earth. They are important components of the ecosystem as they are the only ones that are used for the process of decomposition. The lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria living in oyur body helps in the digestion of the food, provides the necessary nutrients to your body and also helps in destroying the disease causing organisms.

Viruses generally do not benefit us, on the other hand, are probably harmful and destructive in nature. Their main aim is just to reproduce with the help of a host cell that is eventually destroyed later on. AIDS, common cold, chicken pox and polio are the examples of viral illness. The influenza virus captures your healthy cells and spreads throughout your body causing illness. The flu and the Ebola viruses are also very annoying.

The world is full bacteria and viruses. They are found in the soil, oceans, and streams, in animals and on plants. The bacteria and viruses are considered crucial to the ecosystem of the planet Earth and it plays an important role in the human experience.
